Nottoway Correctional Center, Virginia - A Comprehensive Guide for Inmate Family Members

I want to make a complaint on how the facility at Nottaway doesn’t have air central air being it’s so hot and only have fans there. I don’t think it’s right or healthy for the inmates to be in a hot facility with no air when some of those inmates has health issues. Being that it’s so hot can cause major problems and could lead up to death if there’s anyway they can get central air would be a help to everyone being they are paying to be there. I honestly don’t think it’s right not I don’t think anyone would want to be in a hot facility when it’s so hot outside. Please if anyone could get air at the facility to help the inmates because it’s causing problems and making them sick due to the heat.

I’m writing to you hoping you will look into the poor air quality conditions of a facility that has been brought to my attention. Nottoway Correctional Center, 2892 Schutt Road, Burkeville, VA 23922. I have not been there but my son is there and he is in a cell with no air condition or fan. He was placed at Rappahannock Regional Jail and then transferred to Nottoway. The weather now is extremely HOT. He mentioned there are fans in the common areas but NOT in the cells. Some of the inmates have been passing out due to the heat. He also has been without his BLOOD PRESSURE medication for 10 days, since he has been there. He also has broken out in a heat rash all over his body. THIS IS REDICULOUS. If this facility cannot provide proper care and proper air quality and medication, this place should be shut down. He has been placed on 10 days quarantine because he is new to the facility even though he has been tested 3 times for COVID and all results are negative. He is only let out of his cell for 30 minutes a day, that is awful. Just imagine yourself or your family member dealing with this situation. He has asked for his medicine several times, he was told, they will check on it. His wife was told it is on order. Do you know what it is like suddenly STOP taking high blood pressure medicine? If you STOP taking blood pressure medication abruptly, you can experience withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness, trouble sleeping. Now add the 90 degree temperatures that ALL the inmates are dealing with. Someone needs to better regulate these facilities so that this POOR treatment is STOPPED. I have called numerous times and been transferred to a voice mail so has my sons wife and spoke to a Lieutenant ROSS, and still as of today 7/28/22, my son still does not have his blood pressure medication. This is WRONG. It has been 10 days Friday 7/29/22 that my son has been put in a cell for quarantine with no AC or Fan or any type of air flow in this 90 to 100 degree weather and only let out for 30 minutes per day sometimes less, Oh by the way they have just put another cell mate in there with him so the excuse for quarantine is unreasonable . My son has to drink water from his sink and the water has black spots in it. When some of the inmates call out they get no response, This facility needs to be shut down, no one deserves to be treated like this.
